Both Discover it Secured and U.S. Bank Altitude Go Secured require a security deposit and currently advertise no annual fee. They have different rewards structures and account processes. The deposit does not pay your monthly bill.
Compare the cash you must set aside
Check each issuer's current minimum deposit and how it determines the initial credit line. Ask when and under what circumstances the deposit is returned. A card with a lower required deposit could be more practical even if another card has a more attractive earning category.
Understand the review process
Read how each issuer describes account reviews, possible movement to an unsecured card, and deposit return. Do not treat a review as a promise of an upgrade or a specific timeline. Regular on time payments matter, but eligibility decisions remain with the issuer.
Value rewards conservatively
Discover's category cash back and U.S. Bank's dining oriented points have different caps and redemption rules. Convert only benefits you expect to use into a realistic estimate. If paying interest, that cost can exceed modest rewards.
Compare the current deposit, APR, fees, credit reporting, rewards rules and upgrade language directly on each issuer's site. Check your own ability to pay the statement each month.
